Somers & Johnson Named All-GSAC

AZUSA, Calif. -- Senior guard Monica Somers and junior forward Abby Johnson were named to the All-Golden State Athletic Conference team for the 2006-07 season after leading the NAIA’s No. 12-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 23-6 overall record and its best conference record since 2002, a 15-5 mark that landed the Cougars third in the GSAC standings.

Somers claimed the GSAC individual scoring title after averaging 21.4 points per game, and she increased her average to 22.0 points per game in GSAC play. In addition, Somers ranked among the top 15 in assists, steals, assist-to-turnover ratio and shooting percentage categories for field goals, 3-pointers and free throws. Somers is currently holds 3 program records with 619 career free throws made, 800 career free throw attempts and 215 free throws made in a season. She is on pace to set the Cougar records for career and single-season free throw percentage, and she currently ranks fourth in career scoring with 1,749 points.

Somers scored at least 20 points in 16 games this season, topping the 30-point mark 4 times, including a career-high 42-point performance in a 78-69 home victory over Point Loma Nazarene, currently ranked No. 8 in the NAIA. She also scored 30 points in a single half, finishing with 32 points to lead the Cougars to an 88-66 home win over No. 25-ranked Westmont.

Johnson was the Cougars’ second-leading scorer at 13.8 points per game, and she was the team’s leading rebounder at 7.6 rebounds per game. She was the league’s second-best shooter from the field, posting a .572 field goal percentage for the season, and she finished fourth in the GSAC in double-doubles with 7. She ranked sixth in rebounding and blocked shots, 13th in scoring and 14th in free throw percentage.

Johnson scored a season-high 28 points to lead the Cougars to a 77-52 nonconference victory over CS Dominguez Hills and tallied 21 points and a season-high 15 rebounds in Azusa Pacific’s 83-78 win over California Baptist.

The Cougars open GSAC Postseason Tournament first-round play Wednesday (Feb. 28) vs. Fresno Pacific in the Felix Event Center at 7:30 p.m.
