Profile
Marek Szpakiewicz began cello lessons at the age of six in Lublin, Poland, where he was born. In his early years, he studied with Ryszard Losakiewicz and Stanislaw Firlej. He later earned a scholarship to study under Steven Kates at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. Mr. Szpakiewicz is currently working toward his doctorate degree under the tutelage of Eleonore Schoenfeld at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California.

Szpakiewicz has performed with various orchestras under renowned conductors, in addition to duo recitals in such cities as Seattle, Boston, Austin, Indianapolis, Tucson, Kansas City, San Francisco, and Salem. He performs on Vuillaume cello under the patronage of Kystyna Wydzga. Szpakiewicz's talent is not limited to just the music industry; he has also contributed his talent to film orchestration as a collaborator with Polish composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. Their most recent score, for the critically acclaimed movie Finding Neverland, received the 77th Academy Award for Best Score in February, 2005. Kaczmarek praised the cellist as "a master of lush and inventive orchestration."
